“Oryx” salt from the Kalahari Desert to hit Whole Foods shelves in the United States

Bruce Whitfield speaks with founder Samantha Skyring about the listing of Oryx Desert Salt by the multinational American supermarket chain.
The South African brand Oryx Desert Salt scored a major hit with an entry by the iconic US whole foods market.
The salt, mined in the Kalahari Desert, will hit the shelves of the organic supermarket chain in the United States in October.
Bruce Whitfield speaks with Oryx Founder and CEO Samantha Skyring.
Skyring explains that the brand’s logo comes from close encounters she had with an oryx or gemsbok (oryx gazella) during a 7-day 120-kilometer walk through the Namib Desert.
Seven years later, a colleague was selling salt abroad. He didn’t want to offer it to the South African market and I saw an opportunity. I wanted to be able to offer South African consumers this very beautiful salt from the unrefined Kalahari desert.

Skyring’s product comes from a 50 km² salt marsh north of Upington.
The subsoil is a salt lake of 55 million tonnes. It is fed by underground rivers, so it is a renewable and sustainable source and we pump this 100% saturated salt water.

It does various articles in the Kalahari and because it is 100% saturated it crystallizes … and we harvest it from there.

Skyring first discovered Whole Foods about seven years ago, when she started participating in international trade shows.
Customers of the multinational chain are looking for natural, organic and quality products which make Oryx “an ideal solution”.
They choose their products very carefully. Whole Foods has always been my dream, my goal and my intention. Their consumer is a conscious consumer who seeks good quality products.

Oryx sent its first container of product in June, followed by a second last Friday.
A third container is being packed.
It’s been a very steep learning curve in the last six months since we got the list, or a little longer – since the end of January. We will follow each other month to month and see how it goes … We will make sure to deliver continuously.
